Exclusive Conversation with Author and Columnist, Souhardya De
1. Tell us more about your background and journey.
I’ve self-published thrice, twice with Amazon KDP and once with Juggernaut Publishing Platform. Well, the first two were English renderings of the Ramayana in poetry and successively in drama format (one that won the India Book of Records 2019).
The last self-publishing that I did was on a small ebook that has lots of articles within it. These are articles that talk about culture, heritage, history of Indo China relations and others pertaining to close topics.
This time, however, I decided to focus on Medieval Indian History and to go for ‘Historical Fiction’ which is a blend of History and Imagination. Also, since I grasped some understandings of the publishing houses, I decided to go with traditional publishers and thankfully, I have signed up with Rupa Publications India for this upcoming novella!
Featured Interview With Souhardya De
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
It’s always a pleasure to introduce oneself, to the interview team of such a renowned magazine! I’m Souhardya De, born in 2004, in the suburban district of Midnapore, in West Bengal, India. I’m 16 years old and live with my parents, my father being a professor at the nearby college and my mother being a teacher.
And well? For pets? I’m really not good at keeping pets! Probably gonna get a dog in the coming years!
Teen Prodigy: How Has This Intellectual Navigated The Journey To Be A Thoughtful Writer?
Tell us all about A Piece, A Minute; The Chronicles Of Suryavansh and Scion Of Suryavansh! How did these three happen to you at such a young age?
Souhardya (SD): Let me begin with my first book, The Scion of Suryavansh. It is about Valmiki Ramayana that gets transliterated to an English poem with self-drawn illustrations. Why I took up to writing about Indian mythology among the other genres, remains unknown. I recall taking up this book, during the 2017 Summer Holidays at School, after having read a few hundred books and having watched a lot of films. Probably that’s when I developed the urge to create something.
Indian authors set to revive Indic Civilisation
Historical fiction has always been a genre that is less widely believed to be authenticated to its truest form. People are generally of the notion that historical narratives are much accurate and descriptive than this.
Author and Art and Culture Columnist Souhardya De has a different take on this altogether. Souhardya has recently signed up with Rupa Publications, one of India’s largest publishers and writes a fortnightly column for the Sunday Guardian. His primary interests delve into the Graeco Roman studies and Indian Heritage, besides the close cross-cultural interaction between the two. De’s works have been shared extensively by the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and by the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature and Culture.
